The Abyss is a story about a downed U.S. Navy nuclear submarine and a crew from a deep submersible oil-drilling rig who was sent on a rescue mission. In addition to a deep-sea rescue, a hurricane complicates the attempt further. To take charge of the rescue a SEAL team is dispatched, lead by Lieutenant Hiram Coffey (Michael Biehn). Coffey is suffering from a water pressure sickness which impairs is judgment. He continually butts heads with the chief of the oilrig is Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) and Bud’s soon to be ex-wife and boss Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). Life on the underwater rig becomes treacherous once the hurricane plays havoc with the rig’s topside platform. The drilling rig is almost dragged into the abyss because of the problems topside. The crew starts to discover strange events that are potentially not of this world. Coffey continues his down spiral as he interprets these events to be Russian and not alien. He takes one of the warheads from the submarine, rigs it to travel to the bottom of the abyss and detonate. Bud selects himself to travel to the bottom of the abyss in an experimental diving suit to foil Coffey’s plan. What will Bud discover at the bottom of the abyss?
