Unleashed is about a man who was turned into a dog through conditioning and brutality. Danny (Jet Li) is muscle for mobster named Bart (Bob Hoskins). When Danny’s dog collar is removed, his furry is unleashed and will take on anyone with extreme prejudice. One day a rival mobster planned a hit on Bart and in the midst, Danny escapes his bonds. Danny returns to a piano warehouse he was at the day before, and finds a blind piano tuner Sam (Morgan Freeman). Danny was injured during the hit and collapse in front of Sam. Sam is compelled to bring Danny home to help him heal. Sam has a step daughter Victoria (Kerry Condon) who helps Danny regain enough of his humanity that his is never the same again. Through Sam and Victoria’s example, Danny sees the love of music, cooking and basic everyday things, which also help him, become more like a human than a dog. Danny’s past is still just around the corner and will come back to haunt him. The story in part reminds me of Cinderella, Danny of course is Cinderella, Bart is the evil step mother and the two other close thugs are defiantly the two dysfunctional step sisters. There is no ball but a music recital. The action sequences are amazing and something to behold. Jet Li has always been an amazing martial artist but some of the stunts almost defy gravity.
The Movie Rental Review found this movie to be touching and action packed. It also left me feeling for Danny, who was a victim and how one human being could to that to another human being.
