The Interpreter is about a girl who is a translator at the United Nations in New York. She over hears a plot that inadvertently brings her past to light. The girl is Silvia Broome (Nicole Kidman) who spent a majority of her life as a minority in an African country called Matobo. She lost her father, mother and sister to a landmine, which set her political views, at least while she was in Africa. She blames the death of her parents and sister on the president of the country, Edmond Zuwanie (Earl Cameron). As fate would have it, one of the metal detectors malfunctions and as a precaution, the building was evacuated. Silvia leaves a bag behind and must return for it in the dark of night. While in the UN building she over hears a plot to kill the very man who she holds responsible for the death of her parents and sister. Two Secret Service agents Tobin Keller (Penn) and Dot Woods (Catherine Keener) that are part foreign delegate protection squad who are assigned to investigate Silva’s story. Tobin is a bit on the edge because of the recent death of his wife in a car accident. This adds to the already emotional tension emanating from Silvia. She is concerned that this plot has her brother involved, who is the only remaining member of her family. Silva does not find out until much later that one of Zuwanie’s henchmen killed her brother. After the attempt on Silva’s life Tobin becomes her protector right to the very end of the movie.

The Movie Rental Review found this movie to be very slow in the middle but there was many plot threads running through out the movie.

Make the poor African woman a stone-cold white fox in order to sell tickets. Just make sure it has a “we are the world” moral tone and is pro UN and pro peace and we’ll all over-look the glaring absurdity of it all. You simply have to love Hollywood…sigh…
