The Exorcism of Emily Rose is based on a true story about a 19-year old girl named Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter). She died violently from demonic possession, her body just shutdown. This movie is a testament to her story, to shed light on the dark forces that surrounds all off us. Not just one demon but six possess Emily. Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) is the family’s parish priest; the authorities ultimately blamed him for Emily’s death because of the exorcism. A hotshot defense lawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) defends Father Moore for his alleged crime. The trial is more like good verses evil as the character Erin Bruner soon see for herself. I liked how the flash backs of the film revealed the story, slowly. It added an interesting view to the film. I found this movie very touching as I do believe in the spiritual realm and the dark forces that the movie alludes to surround all of us whether we believe in them or not. Emily was put through a very tough ordeal for God’s work. Emily was even given an out but she decided to stay and endure the pain so others would realize the spiritual world exists. I was disappointed in Laura Linney, she walked away from this movie without even a question if any of this is true.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a great movie to raise questions of a spiritual nature. What do you believe?

Fantastic Four starts out with our super hero team leader Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) and his best friend, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) approaching the very rich Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) about a project. Reed wants to work on Victor’s space station to study the effects of cosmic rays on living material. Victor’s deal gives him 75% of the potential revenue. Reed agrees because he is in it for humanity. The two others jointing the trip are Victor’s assistant, Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) and her radical brother Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). Reed was once involved with Sue so this adds extra tension to the mission. As usual, the mission goes bad and all four are exposed to cosmic rays. These cosmic rays “fundamentally alters” their DNA granting each a different super power. Reed’s body becomes elastic; Sue gains the ability to turn invisible; Ben becomes a rock creature with incredible strength; Johnny turns into the human torch that can burn as hot as the sun. Victor also develops the ability to manipulate electricity. Victor becomes the bad guy and calls himself Doctor Doom.
The Fantastic Four was a great movie because I was a comic book fan of the Fantastic Four series.

The 40 Year Old Virgin is about Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell) who is a 41-year old dork with geeky charm that is an inventory clerk in a stereo store. His buddies at the store David (Paul Rudd), Jay (Romany Malco), and Cal (Seth Rogen) invite him out to find out that he is a virgin and they are determined to change that. Andy meets Trish (Catherine Keener) who sells items for people on eBay and meets Beth (Elizabeth Banks). Trish is a very down to earth girl but gets nervous when she want to get physical. Beth on the other hand is a hot young sex freak. Which will Andy choose.
The Movie Rental Review found this movie very hilarious, I laugh throughout the movie. I did find the language a little much but all in all it was very well done.

Sky High is about a mother and father who are super heroes and they are hoping that their teen-age son will become a super hero also.

The father of this super hero family is Commander (Kurt Russell) and the mother goes by Jetstream (Kelly Preston), their son Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) is the 14-year old teen-age son. The parents are well renowned in the super hero biz, saving the world daily. Will is ready for high school (or should I say super hero high school) and will be starting this new high school with is best friend Layla (Danielle Panabaker) who is gifted with controlling plant life. Since Will has not gotten his super power yet, he and his best friend are classed as “side-kicks”. At school, he realizes his super power and hooks up with a senior, the girl of his dreams, Gwen Grayson (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

The Polar Express is movie magic at its finest, guaranteed to delight viewers of all ages. This story starts Christmas Eve, with a boy unable to sleep. He is listening for sleigh bells. He really tries to believe in Santa Claus, but his sense of logic says that the annual ride is just not possible. Instead of hearing reindeer, he hears the noise of a train outside his house. “All aboard!” calls the conductor. “Where are you going?” asks the boy. “Why, the North Pole, of course! This is The Polar Express.”
The Movie Rental Review was blown away by the animation of this movie truly topnotch. This movie has to be one of the best Christmas movies I have ever seen and definitely deserves high ranking for best movie of the year.

Kingdom of Heaven is about lowly blacksmith who has an unknown noble father, he is charged by his father to carry on his father’s duties in Israel after his is dead. In 1184 there is a blacksmith named Balian (Orlando Bloom) who is in mourning over the recent death of his wife and child. The Baron Godfrey of Ibelin (Liam Neeson) who traveled to where Balian lives, to tell him that he is his father. After a scuffle with the town’s priest, Balian decides to follow his father to Jerusalem to cleanse all his and his wife’s sins. His wife committed suicide, and according to the Catholic doctrine, she will be sentenced to hell. They are forced to battle while on the road to Messina because, the bishop is not happy that Balian killed one of his priests. During this battle, Godfrey suffers a fatal wound, but before he passes on Godfrey knights Balian as Baron of Iblein. Some months after surviving a shipwreck, Balian arrives in Jerusalem to try to hear what God as to say to him but he hears nothing. In Jerusalem, he serves a king Baldwin IV (Edward Norton) who suffers from leprosy and the Marshall of Jerusalem, Tiberias (Jeremy Irons). There is also a Templar Knight named Guy de Lusignan (Marton Csokas), which takes an instant dislike to Balian. This does not stop Balian from having an affair with Guy’s wife Sibylla the Princess of Jerusalem (Eva Green). Unrest is brewing as the Arab leader Saladin (Ghassan Massoud) has massed an army of 200,000 men address the raids the Templar Knight are engaging against the local Arab people

The Movie Rental Review thought this was great film. The story and large-scale battle scenes are quit stunning. The references to the Catholic doctrine were hilarious, which made a lot of sense why during that time-period, people did the deeds they did and where highly commended.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starts out with a famous candy-maker named Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp), who is opening his factory to 5 kids that possess one of five golden tickets hidden inside millions of Wonka bars. The Wonka Bar is sold world wide so these ticket will fetch children from very different backgrounds. The lucky five will get a tour of the famous Wonka candy factory which is the largest chocolate factory every built. As word, spreads of the golden tickets the world goes crazy buying Wonka Bars. The first to win a golden ticket was Augustus Gloop (Philip Wiegratz), a fat pig of a boy who thinks chocolate is a primary food group. The second was Veruca Salt (Julia Winter), a very very very spoiled girl in England, who her father (Edward Fox) gets her every whim she desires. He had his peanut shelling factory switch to shelling Wonka Bars to find her a winning ticket. The third was Violet Beauregarde (Annasophia Robb), a real overachiever that has to win at everything no matter how small the task. The fourth was Mike Teavee (Jordon Fry), a very intelligent video gamer (child after my own heart) who finds the ticket using the simple resources at his hands and arrives at the solution in a very logical manner. The fifth and final winner was Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), an extremely poor boy that wins the ticket by fate. He finds the money on the street to buy the last winning Wonka Bar, which he shows his grandfather Joe (David Kelly). Grandfather Joe use to work at the factory before Willy Wonka had closed it to all it workers. He loved his job in the factory and considered it to be, one of the best jobs in the world. He would like to see his beloved factory one more time before he passes on.

The Movie Rental Review loved this remake and many times throughout the movie I was taken back to the original 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. John’s portrayal of Willy reminded me of a cross between Michael Jackson and Mr. Rogers. This is a great story with great values being taught in a very entertaining manner.

Beyond Borders is about woman named Sarah Jordan (Angelina Jolie) who lives in the upper crust of British society. She gets introduced to a relief worker named Nick Callahan (Clive Owen) that crashes a fancy dinner party she was attending. This meeting touches her so deeply that she collects $40,000 to purchase food and medicine, and then proceeds to deliver it to Ethiopia personally. On the trip to the refugee camp where the Nick is stationed, she sees first hand the plight of the Ethiopian people. She picks a mother and her young son who is dying of starvation, this scene was very moving because of how malnourished state of the boy. After she arrives, she sees how callus Nick is to the condition of the wounded mother and starving child. I believe she was able to give his emotions a bit of a “shot in the arm” to remember what he was there for. She leaves a little discouraged after finding out that the supplies she brought would only sustain the camp for four days. Five years pass, Sarah works for the U.N. and flies off to Cambodia to aid Nick because she knows her marriage to Henry Bauford (Linus Roache) is falling apart. She finds out Nick is funding his relief effort by smuggling arms for the CIA. Sarah is not impressed with these actions because it impedes future relief missions. Nick tells Sarah that he lovers here but because of Nick extremely dangerous work, he has to part ways again. Next is six years later, she heads to Chechnya because she senses that Nick is in real trouble and she is right.

The Movie Rental Review found this movie to be very hard to watch at times because of the human tragedies happening to the refugees the Nick was attempting to help. However, this movie gets a high rating because of the wake-up call to the needs of poor and displaced people around the earth it presents.

Crash is about a group of people in a city that the movie follows; we see how racism causes rifts between ethnic groups. Haggis puts together a large all-star cast for this movie to deal with its delicate subject matter, Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Brendan Fraser, Thandie Newton and Ryan Phillippe are just a few off the top. He even pulled Tony Danza into this movie. This movie had many plot threads running through it, some threads crossed paths and some did not. On a personal level, this movie was really quite disturbing. To think that currently we still have this level of racism, quite sad because we have come so far and still have so far to go. One of the most powerful scenes in this movie for me was when Farhad (Shaun Toub) was confronting Daniel (Michael Pena) in front of his house about the money that Farhad believes Daniel owns him from the break in at Farhad’s store. Lara (Ashlyn Sanchez) was watching this confrontation from the front door. Lara sees that Farhad has a gun and she yells to her mother Elizabeth (Karina Arroyave), “He doesn’t have it” (she was referring to the impenetrable cloak). Lara jumps to her father’s defense to protect him just as Farhad fires a shot. The following moments of the great distress that Daniel and Elizabeth felt as they saw their young and innocent daughter get shot was very overwhelming. However, Dorri (Bahar Soomekh) being Farhad’s smart daughter purchased the gun with blanks. The reason why I found this to be a very powerful scene was how far racism can go; the death of innocence is usually the result. This whole movie was like this, it really made you feel for a lot of the characters but there were some characters that got what they deserved.

The Movie Rental Review was going to give this movie a low rating but as I thought about the movie more and more, I came to the realization the brilliance of the script, cinematography and how the actors portrayed their parts. Truly a great depiction of where racism can lead.

The Perfect Man is about a teenager’s quest to find the perfect man for her mother who does not want to grow old along. Holly Hamilton (Hilary Duff) has been moving around every time her single mom Jean (Heather Locklear) breaks up with another man and she is tired of it. She has gotten so use to the moving that she does not plan to attend the prom or get her picture taken for the school yearbook. Holly discovers that her mother has already attracted a real winner of a man Lenny (Mike O’Malley) and she tries to sidetrack her mother by creating the perfect man. The decision is not the most thought out and really turns out to help to come back and bite her. At school she is fitting in until she meets up with Adam (Ben Feldman), when things get to close she decides to run away from the problem like her mother. Adam is a down to earth person who has a real artistic side he expresses through his drawings. I liked his description of what Love is “it’s like friendship on fire”, very true. Holly’s invented perfect man really catches her mom’s eye and when her mom was getting to close Holly decides to break it off with the imaginary man named Ben. She quickly sees that her girl friend’s uncle “Uncle Ben” really is the perfect man for her mother.

The Movie Rental Review found this movie to be funny and sad at the same time. I think this is a great movie for the family.
