Videodrome is a classic David Cronenberg’s horror masterpiece that presents a possible future of television. “Long live the new flesh!” This movie is one that touched some viewer’s deepest fears. I know when I saw it for the first in 1983, part of me was deeply disturbed but another part was pondering the “what if” question.
This movie starts out by Max Renn (James Woods) who works for Lowlife cable TV station and is looking for something to break out, something to put this TV station on the map. Harlan, aka Zonekiller (Peter Dvorsky) stumbles across a pirated signal that broadcasts a sadomasochistic program called “Videodrome”. When Max sees it, he decides that this will be a perfect addition to their current line up of underground programs. Max attends an interview between him, Nicki Brand (Deborah Harry) and Brian O’Blivion (Jack Creley). Max and Nicki hit it off and one night at Max’s apartment, she sees the VHS tape with the short Videodrome transmission. She is determined she is made for that program. Once Videodrome has her, she is used to convert Max into an assassin. “Long live the new flesh!”
